Let me tell you a little story about how I got into Essential Oil usage....
Once upon a time, about 4 years ago, I bought a small house. Oh, the excitement, fear, anticipation and nervousness I felt! I was FINALLY a homeowner. How amazing a feeling was to get that key for the first time. I had intentionally purchased a smaller house, with some out-dated features and secured a renovation loan to build my dream in this small house. Well, for anyone who has gone through renovations, you KNOW it can be a NIGHTMARE. And, of course, it was. I had no expectations of it going anything but smoothly so this was appalling for me.
Contractors were shady or jerks. Things went awry that couldn’t possibly have been anticipated. Cabinets and other materials took FOREVER to arrive. It was not the joyful experience I had come to expect. I became an angry, sad, extremely emotional person. Got in fights with just about every person in my life; was over sensitive and drinking a TON. Not the person I wanted to be. My mom’s dear friend told my mom I should try essential oils, to ‘back her away from the edge’. She could see I wasn’t the person I usually was and that it wasn’t getting better. I went to one of those ‘make and take’ classes. You know the ones, where you make a product and take it with you and listen to the party line on why you should sign up with them? Well, I figured I had nothing to lose. I was constantly angry and depressed so it couldn’t get much worse.
The women there recommended Joy Essential Oil. I smelled it and almost gagged. It smelled just like cat pee, I thought. They told me to put it on my heart, and it would encourage joyful feelings. I was a complete skeptic but, since my brother and I had gotten to the point where we weren’t speaking, I HAD to try something! For the next few months, I used this oil faithfully. I would turn my nose to the right as I placed the oil on my heart. I would try my best not to smell it. Well, you know what? It didn’t fix all my problems. What it DID do, is bring me back down to a reasonable place and be able to see things more clearly. I remembered how happy the sun made me. And fresh flowers. And clean, crisp sheets. I began to keep a journal of ‘good’ things that happened each day, instead of focusing on the bad. Slowly, I began to smile again. I stopped being as angry as I was. I wasn’t as bitter and frustrated over the never-ending renovations. I saw light at the end of the tunnel. I gradually added in some other oils (gratitude and abundance, to be specific) and used these oils as a reminder of life. To live with gratitude and joy produces abundance.
To this day, I still wear these oils, in combination with each other, or separate depending on the day. They are among my rotation. Now, 4 years later, I know that the oils can be placed on the feet for absorption into the body, that I didn’t have to have that directly under my nose. Through my schooling as a future naturopath, I know that we should rotate our oils and not use the same one every single day. I know the chemical reason they work, and work well.
There are a lot of debates on oil brands: the good, the bad and the ugly. I am not a hater on other brands as long as you do your research. Not all oils are created equally. Does that mean I support Young Living and Young Living alone? No. Does that mean I buy my oils at a dollar/discount store? Also no. My friends, I implore you to purchase your oils through a reputable company. Yes, they can be expensive. Isn’t your health worth it? These aren’t just tiny bottles of good scents. These are tiny bottles of healing, stress-reducing bliss.
When purchasing an oil, you want to make sure it is 100% therapeutic grade, MINUS any fillers. Some companies will put 100% natural or something similar on their bottles and while the essential oil may be 100% natural, they forget to mention they have put this in a solution for you already. The higher end oils are simply that- Essential Oils. Undiluted, unamended, pure oils. You get to dilute. You get to pick the carrier oil, if you add one.
Oils are amazing, lovely, and fun. They can last a long time with proper care and usage. We have to remember that, with oils, a little is better than a lot. Our bodies can take a small amount and turn them into something wonderful.
I challenge you to give them a try. My school, the Naturopathic Institute of Therapies and Education sells oils by the drop, so you are welcome to let me know what you need and I can get a smaller amount for you to try. I am a big fan of this, to make sure you are making the right decision. If you want something that I have at home, I am happy to pick up some mini bottles and sell you a few drops of my own.
Regardless of your oil ‘dealer’, (Young Living, DoTerra, Plant Therapy, Nature’s Sunshine, Uttati, etc.), just know your pros/cons and cautions. For example, Peppermint should not be used if you are pregnant. Citrus oils cannot be exposed to sunlight while in a bottle or on your skin. Read the labels, do your research, and GET HEALTHIER!
